Salem Oregon Stuff & Local Businesses

Often some of the pesky little cleaning issues creep up on us and when it’s time to make sure our home is ready for a big event or put on the market for sale we finally notice that things aren’t as perfect as they should be!

One item our Oregon home staging company finds often is overlooked, even in the most spotless homes, is keeping the grout well sealed and cleaned.  The new sealers are greatly improved over what was available a few years ago (some touting a 15 year guarantee or more).  If your grout looks good we recommend cleaning it and resealing it so it stays this way (save yourself a ton of work)!

If the grout lines look grungy, this is a job that can seem overwhelming.  (I’ll confess – this is a job I do not want to do myself!)

Recently we had VS Restoration take care of a home that had a fabulous kitchen, but the dirty grout was distracting from it’s great look. cleaning grout makes a huge improvementHere’s the before and after of what they accomplished!

I think the difference is amazing.  This home is for sale, and now home buyers will notice the beautiful kitchen – not wonder how long it will take to get the floor to look good!

Our clients receive a 15% discount on services from VS Restoration!!!

They specialize in carpet, upholstery and grout cleaning and offer years of experience so you will feel confident when trusting them with your cleaning needs.  Contact them at 541-979-2525!

With a slow economy, most non-profit organizations are feeling the effects through low donations in 2010.  As year end approaches, you still have a chance to make a donation (you can do so on their website) to this valuable charity that changes lives here in Salem.  I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to post this year end letter from Salem IHN — a charity that has captured our hearts years ago.

The car was parked in the back of the store parking lot each night for the past three nights. Exhaust idled out of the tailpipe and the windows were fogged. The engine turned off and the baby cried as her parents kept her warm by adding another blanket over the car seat. “I hope there’s room at the shelter tomorrow…”

Every day families in our community in tough financial situations lose their housing. After falling behind on bills and selling possessions, another family loses their home and is left without the resources to move into an apartment or continue to live with friends or family. Parents have few places to turn that are safe for their children and that can provide a helping hand in starting fresh and securing housing for their family. Every year, over 40 families find that help at Salem IHN.

With our network of 14 hosting congregations, 15 support congregations and 900 volunteers, Salem IHN is bringing families out of homelessness and offering a community of support that helps families move into their own apartment and continue to succeed after leaving the program. Our intensive case management services help both the families staying in the program and an increasing number of families outside the program find connections and services to become successful.

Families make up 40 percent of our city’s homeless population and half of the children are under the age of six. It is vital that these families are able to stay together in a safe environment while they seek employment and plan how to move into a home of their own again.

With your generous financial support, this critical service will continue to serve homeless families next year with shelter, meals and case management. Every gift makes a difference, no matter the amount. I hope that you will partner with us to continue our invaluable work by making a financial contribution this holiday season.

God’s peace and love to you,

Andrew Lane

When home stagers claim of more showings and quicker sales, sometimes it can seem “too good to be true”. Is it really worth the investment? How can you market your home in 2011 and get it sold?

Does Staging Make a Difference?Following is the experience of one Salem Oregon agent who while skeptical of staging claims gave it a try to see if it would help her clients.

I met with three of my clients recently who had vacant homes for sale.  The homes had been on the market for a small bit of time.  A few showings but not much.  I sat down with my clients individually and explained that most people begin looking on line before they begin seeing homes in person.    There is a ten second window to catch someone’s attention sufficient enough that they will click through  more pictures and decide to see the home.  Do … Read More

No Clutter Gift Giving Ideas

Please Santa - No clutter gifts only under the tree!

You’ve all had these type of bombs drop into your hands.

  • Gifts you didn’t need
  • didn’t want
  • Clothes that were wrong/ill fitting/etc
  • Perfume that smelled like it was from the 80’s
  • “Special” decorating items – (where should I hang this Big Mouth Billing the Singing Bass?)

You’ve probably given a few of these gifts too.

Like the plate of goodies to the diabetic, wine to the neighbor who is going to AA, or stuff that simply clutters up peoples lives.

We give gifts to make others feel special, they keep it because it was from someone special . . . no wonder most of us bemoan of too much “stuff”!

We hate clutter and while those slippers might be adorable – I already have three pairs – please don’t buy them for me!

Now I’m no grinch and love to give — but want to give something they will love — long after the gift wrap is tossed!

Here’s some quick, easy and no-clutter gifts ideas!

  • prepaid car wash card
  • tickets to an event – a movie, concert, dinner theatre, comedy show
  • Specialty things they can use up and don’t normally splurge for – specialty teas, coffees, wines
  • Donation to a local charity in their name
  • Gift certificate for a massage, manicure, pedicure
  • Organizing services – who doesn’t want to start 2011 with a fresh start?

Of course these are  my top favorites!  We have lots of clients booking these home improving services with us for 2011 — What a fun way to start the year with a fresh clean house, or a room that looks all new (with things you already own)!

The gift of cleaning (one time special cleaning or on a regular service) – sparkling clean with no sweat is DIVINE!

Interior Redesign Home Makeover – Make a home or room a tv star!  Create a fresh look for a room or the entire house using your existing furnishings and decor.  What a great idea to get a fresh start on 2011!

Color & Paint Consultations – Painting a room provides a huge impact for low dollar – if it is the perfect color! Paint it the right color the first time!

Make sure your gifts are loved far into 2011 and not tossed out with the fruitcake!  For more of  services click here. We also work with top notch contractors and service providers so love to give you referrals to experts you can trust!

Want holiday cookies and no time to bake?

Want to have some wonderful cookies but don’t have time to bake?

Get out of the kitchen and participate in the Salem Multi Office Tour this Thursday.  On tour this week is area 40.  Bring your platter or tupperware and grab some goodies from each house.

Our staging is featured at one of the homes on tour (3240 Hillside Lane) so we’ll have some great cookies there (hmmm rum balls, biscotti or maybe some white chocolate macadamia?)

If you haven’t participated in the tour – don’t you want tons of agents touring your house in 2011 and getting lots of feedback for your sellers? It’s well worth the small amount of time invested!

This week, many agents will meet at French Press for coffee at 9:30 then head out on tour.  Or download the tour list from Paragon and tour at your convenience.  Just don’t forget your cookie containers!
If you know anyone that might to participate on the multi-office tour, contact Melina Tomson [melina@tomsonburnham.com].

We got lots of calls yesterday.  As former residents of Aumsville Oregon, and now just living about four miles from where the tornado touched down, people were wondering just how widespread the destruction was in this quiet little town.

Main Street Aumsville after tornado

Main Street Aumsville OR after tornado

I zipped out there this morning finding main road cleared and lots of camera crews from the local and Portland news stations.   Today we’ve got lots of beautiful blue sky – a very different picture than yesterday!

A few side streets were closed, large light poles were erected outside damaged homes to keep looters at bay and I know that various agencies such as the search and rescue were on duty through the night guarding damaged homes.

Aumsville Oregon damage to homes due to tornado

It was amazing how one home and yard would be in perfect condition, while the neighboring home was severely damaged.  Trees uprooted, roofs torn off – amazing examples of how quickly and violently mother nature moved through this town.

Aumsville OR as of 12/15/10

I think it’s miraculous there was no lives lost or serious injuries!  We heard that the damage effected 10 businesses and 50 homes.  It was amazing how well everything was cleaned up, boarded, fenced and protected.  We’re hoping for quick insurance response and restoration for these victims!

Here comes Santa! While our business is all about making  beautiful homes here is the Willamette Valley – there isn’t anything more beautiful than happy, secure children is there?

One cause near and dear to our hearts are homeless families, especially the homeless children here in Oregon.  It’s a staggering number of children whose homes may be in cars, friend’s sofas, and changing daily.  We serve on the board of homeless shelter and feel that by improving the stability of these families, we can improve our community.

The Salem Association of REALTORS Community Fund creates a magical Christmas celebration for children from the Salem-Keizer School District Homeless Education Program.  Last year over 150 disadvantaged children attended the party, complete with a visit from Santa Claus toting presents, food and fun activities.

This year over 250 children are anticipated and the Salem Association of REALTORS Community Fund needs your help.

Make a Christmas memory – every small donation creates magic — a smile on the face of a child!

See the information on the website of Salem Association of REALTORS Community Fund or contact us for donation information.

Here’s some highlights from last year’s party.

Home Decor - Oregon Home StagingWhere do you shop for stylish home decor items?

We get asked that question all the time!  Shopping locally in Salem Oregon and supporting small businesses too is a priority for our company.  Can you find bargains and stylish decor here in Salem?  Yes!

I popped into one of my favorite Salem stores this Saturday – Real Deals on Home Decor.  Not in the heart of shopping territory – but easy to find (corner of Gaines and Liberty) and at 10 a.m. was already bustling with lots of shoppers.  I heard one exclaim – “I want it all”!  As home stagers we shop here all the time, and even with our warehouses, I don’t think that’s possible!  With new items coming in all the time they always have new home decor products I love love love every time I shop!!

What was catching my eye at Real Deals on Home Decor this week?

  • Adorable lamps – great for adding some style and warmth to rooms on winter days!
  • Nice large clocks can fill an empty wall so easily – I bought a attractive one with a large metal frame – $22-you can’t beat the price!
  • Looking for Christmas decorating inspiration? They had several decorated Christmas trees in the shop – all stunning and bound to get compliments!  My fave was the silver and lime tree – stylish and contemporary!

Are you Chicken to Spice Up Your Decor?

Why would a home buyer choose your home over all the other homes listed for sale?  The current real estate market in Oregon is competitive, making is even more important to pull out all the stops and assure your home stands out in the ocean of listings.

If only 10% of homes are selling, you need to make sure your home outshines the rest and when viewed online and in person creates an outstanding first impression.

Here’s an example of a home we staged in Salem Oregon this week.  Beautiful home, desirable neighborhood, but did it stand out vacant in the top 10% of “must see” listings?

This savvy home seller contacted us to make sure her listing has maximum exposure and appeal to home buyers!

You can’t change the real estate market or your competition.  The only home selling factors you have control of is price, condition and presentation. Homes that linger on the market become subject to price reductions to draw attention back to the listing.
